A Different Kind of Farming

The day that my parents, The Mr. and I spent driving along Chuckanut drive, we also visited Taylor Shellfish Farms. It has been in operation for over 100 years. They have 12 different farms located throughout the USA, Canada, Mexico, Fiji and Hawaii and are the largest producer of manilla clams in the USA. They cultivate a greater variety of shellfish than any other producer in the world.

At this farm, they harvest oysters, clams, mussels and geoduck, but also sell a variety of other sea food including local crab and salmon. It was very interesting to learn about their methods of seeding and harvesting their "crop." My dad's a prairie grain farmer, so anything to do with seeding and harvesting is interesting to him, even if it is as different as sea food farming!

Click on each photo to view full size. The sepia toned photo shows how different things used to be around the farm. The other photo shows the area where the sorting and packing is now done. At the time this photo was taken, they were sorting oysters and putting them into mesh bags.

  1. And ... their pop machine serves Diet Coke dated 2004. Real yummy...NOT, should have picked another brand.

  2. That was so disgusting. I am glad I didn't have to be the one to taste it. Yuck. I should call the company lol. I really wonder the story behind that one.

  3. It's possible for diet coke to go bad? I thought it was basically embalming fluid already. Note to self - do not drink 3-year-old soda!
