I Love Fall

heart shaped leaves

Why?

See- colorful leaves, bright green grass (I'm in the NW!), rose hips, late blackberries, snow berries, the fireplace, harvest moon.

Hear- air rushing through the heat vents, children making use of the few short minutes of day light after dinner, crunchy leaves underfoot, crickets, a lone frog instead of hundreds, kids getting off the bus across the street at 3:15, piano practicing from a neighbors window.

Taste- London Fogs (earl grey tea/steamed milk/vanilla syrup or honey), pumpkin spice lattés, soups and eventually egg nog, baked pumpkin seeds, local apple cider (hot or cold), squash, yams and sweet potatoes.

Touch- warm fleece blankets, the heat in the house, sweaters, cold air, scarves, socks.

Smell- cinnamon, nutmeg, old leaves, baking, rain, wood smoke, crisp fresh air, spicy scented candles, home made apple sauce simmering on the stove.

I could add so much more. It's the season to wrap up in a blanket with tea and a good book. Walk outside and crunch leaves underfoot as you sneak the last few blackberries of the season. It's when people start staying inside and playing games as a family. It's when ovens are busier, jars of food are put on the shelf for eating in the months to come and the house smells like spices.

  1. AMEN! Autumn is my favorite season--you forgot to mention soup (at least I didn't see it-could be I'm blind :-)) and chili. Cold crisp mornings, warm afternoons with just a touch of cool around the edges. Hot chocolate. Sweatshirts. Squash. And, just two words: Comfort food. Yay for autumn!

  3. Chili is more of a winter food for me, as it is what we usually eat after a day of snowboarding! But how could I miss squash! I am going to add it right now, as well as some more photos.

  4. it all sounds amazingly wonderful... I felt dreamy and swept up as I read your post. Also being in the NW and having today's high reach 90, I'm missing true fall a bit. This helped balm my soul :)
