Getaway

Last weekend, The Mr. had a four day weekend and we decided to go on our first overnight boating getaway. We packed the boat up with all the necessities and left Thursday afternoon. Sleeping bags and pillows were thrown in the cabin as well as a duffel bag of clothes and the fridge (icebox) was packed with food and ice. The most important thing was that the wave and weather forecast was good. We were off!

We headed out to one of our favorite islands- Sucia Island. When we arrived in Fossil Bay, there was plenty of space at the dock so we chose a spot and tied up for the night. We have been to this island a couple of times, but we were still glad that there was plenty of time to explore before the sun was set for the night as it is such a beautiful place. We started up the cook stove and I heated up some taco beef that I had brought with us for making taco salad, then the food was packed into a bag and walked to a skinny little part of the island along the bay. We set out our little picnic of taco meat, shredded lettuce, cheddar, salsa, sour cream and tortilla chips and it satisfied our rumbling stomachs. Preparing for the boating-camping trip had been a lot of work and we were definitely ready for some refreshment and some relaxation.

After our meal, we hiked up the ridge on the side of the Island that faces Canada and were met with some spectacular views. The water was completely smooth in places and then it would meet with a current and weave a line of ripped up, choppy looking water. The layers of islands on the horizon create such a stunning rainbow of color when the sun is setting, sometimes in blues and greys or oranges and browns. Watching the sun make it's way further down towards the earth as we continued our hike gave us an opportunity to see so many different colors and beautiful sceneries! When we were back at the boat, I felt more relaxed than I had been in a long time!

We woke up to silence. Bright light was streaming in the porthole above our feet, so we knew it was time to wake up. I felt so well rested! Our first sleep on the boat was a success! I was definitely a little leery about sleeping on the boat at first, and The Mr. said I would jerk awake over and over as I was falling asleep. I guess I must have thought we were going to drift away. Silly me. We stayed in the exact same place the entire time and nothing scary happened. Once in the middle of the night I thought for sure that a sea lion had hopped onto the back of our boat, or that we were crashing into rocks. It must have been a rogue 2 inch wave that fed my active 2 am imagination! Anyways, we were in the same spot as always and it was such a relief that I really didn't think I would ever worry about it again. I guess we will see if that comes true.

I hope you enjoy the photos below as well as more in the days to come as I slowly work on sharing them here. I hope you feel like you are visiting these places through the lens of my camera and that these photos prompt you to take your own adventures into the San Juan Islands sometime soon.

We're off.

What's ahead. SO CALM!

Our arrival at Fossil Bay, Sucia Island.

I think this is the greenest we have seen the island.

I love sun flare!

Warming up the taco meat for dinner.

Our picnic destination.

A beautiful wooden boat at a nearby dock.

The Mr's plate.

Fox Cove.

There has been no editing on any of these photos other than straightening and they were all taken in either auto or landscape mode. This is purely the beauty of the Creator!

On the lower right is mushroom rock of Fox Cove, but in this photo, it looks like a boy with a hat on if you ask me.

The view from our "back porch."

A nice way to get the cabin toasty warm before bed. It really wasn't that cold but I like being warm. :)

  3. Oh how fun!! What a beautiful area and such a serene spot to camp in. Love the pictures; made me feel like I was right there with you :) I too have an over-active imagination, so I am sure my thoughts through the night would be steering towards scenes from that Tom Hanks movie where he is stranded on an island. Makes the adventure even more exciting!
